What The 2024 Election Means for AI Regulation

The 2024 election approaches and the implications for AI regulation are becoming a focal point of discussion among policymakers, technologists, and the public. With the polls close for both candidates, this critical moment in history can mean two different worlds of AI regulation.

A 2023 online poll by Rethink Priorities found that 70% of American adults would support the federal regulation of AI. This puts incredible pressure on the future of AI regulations, especially considering that both candidates have differing strategies for handling AI regulations in the United States. The outcome of this election could significantly shape how artificial intelligence is governed in the United States and beyond.

Trump-Vance in their platform states how they would “support AI Development rooted in Free Speech and Human Flourishing” and would also repeal the Biden Administration’s Executive Order.

Harris-Walz has decided to continue with the plans of the Biden Administration, further prioritizing the plan highlighted in Executive Order 14110. Most notably, it would continue its plan of 150 requirements for agencies and other federal groups to mitigate the negatives of AI systems whilst still fostering their development.

Both plans drastically conflict with each other in goals and methodologies, and so the public anxiously waits. What is clear is that AI will continue to be in a pivotal moment where it can change and impact many lives. The days before the polls open are only counting down, and so are the days before keeping or changing America’s AI regulations for four more years.
